Elva Hsiao, a Mandarin pop singer/songwriter, who was born in Taipei, Taiwan as Ya-Xuan Xiao, has become a household name among the Chinese community. Soon after she entered a talent competition, when she was just a student at a high school in Vancouver, British Colombia, she landed a deal with Virgin Records/EMI Taiwan. One year after her big break in Canada, Elva delivered her 1999 self-titled album which went platinum very quickly. The combination of her stunning beauty, clear voice and hip dance moves helped to propel her career.
The pressures of celebrity life came down hard, as she managed to make six albums in four years. In addition, Elva was hired for big brandname TV commercials, and put in plenty of hours in front of the cameras, making music videos to her upbeat dance songs or slow ballads, such as I Love You That Much (2001).
In 2004, after she had already participated in two movies, The Butterfly Lovers (voice) and Infernal Affairs, the record companies were desperate to sign the pop princess, while her contract with EMI was coming to an end. She eventually chose Warner Music in 2005, which ended up being a wrong career move, since the company underwent some major changes, subsequently leading to a never-ending delay to release her album. Her album had been postponed for such an unacceptable number of days that her fans had grown impatient and at one point many of them expressed their frustration on Warner’s Website forums, causing it to crash for a span of one week.
